What's up in the Classroom?

Hi my name is Jasmine. I'm going to explain different types of things that our awesome class does. First I'm going to tell you about our math. Our class is learning about fractions. So far we have made a fraction kit. We use the fraction strips to solve story problems. At first I hated doing fractions but my teacher has encouraged me to do my best.

Next I'm going to explain about what we do for reading. My teacher meets with groups to work on a story. Finally I'm going to explain about how my two teachers are my favorites. There my favorites because they are so nice and funny because I think they both have a big heart.

Valentine's Day

Hi I'm Omar. Last week we were celebrating Valentine's Day. We had chips, popcorn, cupcakes, chocolate milk and drinks. We were working on an art project for our families or for the retirement home. We used water paint, crayons and rubber segment glue. When we were working on the art project we were eating. Some people were working on the story board. It was a very good time.

Edmodo Gives 5th Graders the Opportunity to Share Their Thoughts on Figurative Language

During the 3rd quarter all the 5th graders are exploring what figurative language is and why an author uses it in hopes of them incorporating more figurative language into their own writing as well as understanding all texts they read at a deeper level.  With the new iPads,  all the students that are in Mrs. Haskell's smaller skill groups, are getting the opportunity to create their own message board and they will then be able to share their thoughts on figurative language with the others in their group.  It has the appeal of a social networking site but it is a safe and secure environment in which only students who are in our groups communicate with each other.  We just started this last week and there is an eagerness on everyone's part to see how it can enhance our learning.  If you would like to check out the website and see how it works for you self just go to:  edmodo.com.  There is a nice video that explains how it works.  Students will even be able to submit assignments to me through the website.  We are going to have a blast using this tool to enhance our understanding of text and becoming better writers.
Students Eyllin, Mariah, Felicia, Bibi, Jarod, and Roberto eagerly work on their new iPads.  There is no stopping them!
Felicia is caught engaged.  Nothing else matters.

5th Grader Eagerly Use iPads to Show Their Math Thinking

Our group is daily using the new iPads to practice math facts and to show our mathematical thinking.  Instead of using our same old white boards we now have an iPad app that functions as a chalkboard.  Once we draw our thinking we can send it to Mrs. Haskell and she can take a peek to make sure we are on the right track and give us quick feedback.  We are working on a division unit and below is  picture of what we have drawn to show our mathematical thinking. This is just the beginning of what we will be able to do.  We plan to start using Kahn Academy very soon to reinforce and get extra practice on what we are learning in class.
